He was born Wellman Wiley Mohundro. His parents were Iley Brigham Mohundro, and Genevive M. Jones, both of Illinois. His baby sister, Muriel Mohundro, was born 5 August 1914, and died 17 September 1914, in Delta County, Michigan. Wellmann enlisted in the United States Army, on 4 April 1941, in Escanaba, Delta County, Michigan. He was discharged 12 February 1942. Embarking on a music career at which time he changed his last name to Omohundro. Sometimes advertising himself as "Omo the Hobo," a strolling troubadour, he wrote and recorded scores of novelty songs, playing the guitar and harmonica. In his lifetime he cut 150 singles, his music copyright under the name "Smiley Joe Omohundro." Wellman was married several times. His first wife, Joan Gail Thompson, was born 6 June 1940, in Augusta County, Virginia. They meant in Miami, Dade, Florida; later marrying 18 December 1961, in Houston, Harris, Texas; before moving to the Los Angeles area of California. Together they had a son, Wellman Tyrone Omohundro, who was born 25 July 1962, in Los Angeles County, California. Wellman and Joan Omohundro, divorcing October 1970, in Los Angeles County, California. Wellman, later married, Barbara Jean Froehlich, who was born 10 September 1945, in Pittsburgh, Allegheny, Pennsylvania. They married 9 November 1979, in Los Angeles County, California; later seperating after several years; Wellman, returned to the family home at 1411 3RD Ave., S. Escanaba, Delta, Michigan, where he would die on 15 May 1996, at the D. J. Jacobetti Home for Veterans in Marquette, Marquette, Michigan. He was buried 18 May 1996, at New Garden Cemetery, in the family plot, in Garden, Delta, Michigan.
