John was the son of Sarah (Shanafelt) and Asa Ballard of Mooresville, Morgan County/Hendricks County, Indiana. John was a farmer, Republican and Friend; his homestead sat in a grove of pine trees located in a Quaker community, religiously known as Fairfield Meeting of the Society of Friends.

In 1868 he married Ella Woodward and together they had three daughters, Lura Sarah (Ballard) Nordyke, Jessie (Ballard) Roberts Wherry, and Nellie (Ballard) Old. Ella Woodward was the daughter of William H. P. and Keziah (Bray) Woodward.

John Dayton and Ella (Woodward) Ballard moved from Indiana to Parsons, Labette County, Kansas and there spent the remainder of their lives.

Mr. John Dayton Ballard was one of the early business men and property owners of Parsons. He was a member of the Masonic Order, Shrine Degree; and the following remarks were embodied in a set of resolutions: "Sir Knight Ballard was a conscientious business man, a faithful member of the Methodist Episcopal Church and a loyal and chivalrous Knight of Coeur de Lion Commandery. In his home, in all his social relations, in the various engagements and duties of life, he manifested a warm heart, a kindly disposition and an inflexible integrity of purpose. In his active life he made friends, and in his death they are his sincere mourners." . . He is seventh in direct descent from Colonel Thomas Ballard, 1630-1689, who was a Vestryman in Burton Parish Episcopal Church at Williamsburg, Virginia, and whose home was 'Middle Plantation.' The Ballard family has an interesting Coat of Arms.
