James was the son of George and Nelly Morgan. He was married to Sarah Jane Haggard on October 9, 1867 in Wayne County, Tennessee.
Lieutenant, Companies K, E & B, 7th Tennessee Cavalry, adjacent office, enlisted on 6/25/1862 and mustered at Humboldt, TN on 8/11/1862. He was a POW somewhere before 4/12/1864 and was detached in September/October 1864, most likely recruiting. He was discharged with the regiment when it disbanded at Nashville, TN on 8/7/1865. He applied for an invalid's pension in 1885. In 1889 he joined the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) Post #65. His wife applied for a widow's pension and there is also a minor's pension.
