George Washington Greene, nicknamed "Buckshot", was a farmer, preacher and politician. At the
end of his life he owned 600 acres near McAlpin, Suwannee County, Florida, which he sold
shortly before his death. He was an Advent Christian preacher, and he served as a State
representative from Suwannee County in Tallahassee. A monument is erected in Tallahassee
honoring his part in introducing the Suwannee River Improvement Act, and he also co-sponsored
a bill to provide text books for Florida school children.
His first wife was Sarah Elizabeth Wheeler with whom he raised 14 children before she died in an
accident. He then married Lila Mae Thomas having one child, Edna Earl. He married late in life to
Mary Bonnell with no children from the union.
He also had a family in Benton, Columbia County Florida, producing 4 children with Missouri
Wheeler, cousin to Sarah Elizabeth Wheeler
