He was the son of Lt. Col. Olavi and Eevi Alakulppi and was the brother of Maija Alakulppi Harrington. He was the husband of Sharon and the father of Kimberley Lynne and Kurt Erik. He graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1963. He was killed in action while serving as the commanding officer of his army company and received the Silver Star posthumously.
