Royalty, King of France, eldest son of Louis VIII and Blanche de Castile. During the 8th Crusade his army besieged Tunis and was seized by an epidemic. After receiving the news of his sons death of shigellosis Louis succumbed to the illness himself. Following his wish his heart remained in northern Africa and has since been lost. His intestines were first buried in the Cathedral of Monreale where they stayed for several centuries. Francis II of Sicily took them with him when he fled into exile. After his death they were brought to Carthage. After Tunisian independence they were bought to Paris. (bio by: Lutetia)
