BERTHA ALVES
On Wednesday, January 5th, 1916, on her 81st birthday anniversary, Mrs. Frederick Alves passed away at the home of her son-in-law, Max P. Wiechmann at Forest Junction, after an illness of ten days with pneumonia.
Bertha Schirmer was born in Fraustadt, Germany, Jan. 5th, 1835. She came to America with her parents, the late Andrew and Elinore Schirmer, who settled in Sheboygan Falls. She was married in that city on Nov. 9, 1858 to Frederick Alves and lived on a nearby farm until 1877 when they disposed of the homestead and moved to Chilton town onto the farm now the possession of Geo. Oakley, west of this city. In 1895 they sold the farm to their son, Herman, and moved to Forest Junction, retiring from active life. Mr. Alves died in April of that year, since which time his widow has made her home with her daughter, Mrs. Max Wiechmann.
Her husband was a member of Company H, of the 6th Wis. Reg. Inf., and during his absence at the front she took charge of the farm, courageously managing the same until his return, and not only in this instance but all through life she has bravely done her part as a Christian wife and mother. Unselfishness and faithfulness to duty characterized her life and won for her the love and respect of all who knew her.
The funeral was held on Saturday morning from the home to Zion Evangelical church at Forest Junction where Rev. Koten conducted services, the remains being brought to his city and laid at rest in the Breed cemetery.
The deceased is survived by two sons; Herman Alves of Hanna, North Dakota, and bus whose address is unknown, and one daughter, Mrs. Max Wiechmann of Forest Junction. She also leaves five grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
