Washington Foglesong was born on 5 October 1833 in Dayton, Montgomery County, Ohio, a son of Christian and Phoebe (Leslie) Foglesong; when he was 4 years old, he moved with his family from Dayton, Ohio to Logansport, Cass County, Indiana; he returned to Dayton, went to college, and later taught school there in Dayton. He married Hortense Vincent on 25 April 1861 in Dayton, Montgomery County, Ohio; Hortense was born 12 December 1836 in Rensselaer County, New York , a daughter of R. G. and Charlotte Vincent; she died on 25 February 1862 in Dayton. They had one son, William "Willie" Foglesong born in 1862.

Washington married 2nd, Catherine "Kate" Sarah Bower on 24 August 1865 in Dayton, Montgomery County, Ohio. They had 4 children and Kate died on Christmas Day, 1884, after the birth of their youngest child.

After his wife Kate died, Washington moved to Long Island, New York to be closer to his daughter, Mattie. He died on 30 July 1925 in Sea Cliff, Nassau County, New York while living there with his daughter, Mrs. Samantha "Mattie" Herbert and her family.

Washington's occupation at various times was school teacher, lumber dealer, inventor of horse collars and square baking pans as described in various census records.

Washington and his wife Kate had 4 children:
1- Hortense Foglesong
2- Nellie Foglesong
3- Samantha "Mattie" Foglesong - married Robert Gaston Herbert.
4- Mae Foglesong, daughter who died at one day old.

FOGLESONG--Washington, former resident of Dayton, Ohio for many years, died July 30; aged 91 years, 9 months, 25 days, at the residence of his daughter, Mrs. Mattie Herbert, at Sea Cliff, Long Island, N. Y. The body will be cremated and the ashes sent to Dayton for burial in the family plot at the Woodland Cemetery and Arboretum.
