J. Carroll Smith, of Hanover, passed away peacefully April 8, 2012. He was the husband of 71 years to Anna Grace (Long) Smith.

Born August 30, 1917, in Adams County, he was the son of the late Francis X. and Irene (Felty) Smith.

Carroll was retired from Myers Arboretum in Hanover where he was the caretaker.

He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Hanover, the VFW in Littlestown, and was a veteran of the Army serving during WWII in the European Theatre.

Surviving in addition to his wife are five children, Lillian DePalmer and husband Michael of Glenville, Carol Ann Keller of New Oxford, Karen George and husband Douglas of York Springs, Ronald J. Smith and wife Annie of Delaware, and Brian C. Smith and wife Sandra of York; 17 grandchildren; and 30 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a son: Laverne L. Smith and five siblings: Lillian, Cyril, Philip, Flavian, and Ben Smith.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10 a.m. April 12, 2012, at St. Joseph Church in Hanover, with Rev. Joseph F. Gotwalt officiating. Burial will follow in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Edgegrove, with military honors provided by the Hanover Allied Veterans Honor Guard.
