On the orders of mobster Jacob "Little Augie" Orgen, he was hired to murder Jewish gang leader Nathan "Kid Dropper" Caplin, who had been Orgen's arch rival in the union rackets of New York City, New York. On August 28, 1923 he carried out his task, shooting and killing Caplin as he sat in a taxicab in front of the Essex Market Court House in lower Manhattan. Kerzner was subsequently convicted of the murder and sentenced to 25 years in prison. He was paroled in 1937. Two years later, he was shot to death on a Manhattan Street on the orders of mob leader Lepke Buchalter.
