His high birth, his generosity, his zeal for the public good are loudly commended by the contemporary historian Frodoard, who gives him the title of "Great". Benedict IV held a synod in the Lateran Palace, crowned Emperor Louis III, the Blind, and recognized the legitimacy of Pope Formosus and upheld his ordinances. He died sometime in the summer of 903.
