Elisabeth Christine of Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel
Birth: Nov. 8, 1715
Death: Jan. 13, 1797

German Nobility. Queen consort to King Friedrich II. the Great of Prussia. The marriage was completely for political reasons. He was unwilling to marry her, but his father had imprisoned him in the Castle Küstrin and the only chance to be released was to marry. After the marriage in 1733 they lived in the Castle Rheinsberg. In 1740 Friedrich succeeded his father and the couple lived in different places from then on. She lived in the castle Niederschönhausen while he built Sans Souci which she never visited. He totally ignored her and only met her when necessary. She survived him by 11 years. There have been some speculations that Friedrich might have been homosexual. (bio by: Lutetia)
