Musician. Born in Newark, New Jersey, he was an influential jazz bassist best known for his work with the Bill Evans Trio. He was in his second year at college to study music when he joined Buddy Morrow's band and went on a cross country tour. In the mid 1950s, at the Los Angeles music scene, he became known as one of the best young bassists performing with artist to include Benny Goodman, Chet Baker, Miles Davis and Stan Kenton. In 1959, after many gigs, he joined the Bill Evans Trio, went on the Jazz Festival tour circuit and recorded the albums "Sunday at the Village Vanguard" and "Waltz for Debby", which are considered among the finest live jazz recordings. Although he performed for only six years, his innovative approach to the bass redefined jazz and inspired a generation of bassists who followed him.
