At the time of his death, Dr. Robert A. Evans was the Franklin County Coroner. He began serving as Coroner on September 1, 1948, serving a 4 year term. He was elected continuously until his death.
Born in Crooksville, Perry County, Ohio to David and Iva Evans. In 1910 he was with parents and a few siblings in Perry County. By 1920 His father had passed and he was the only person living with his mother in Harrison TWP, Perry County, Ohio.
Dr. Evans graduated from Ohio University and Georgetown Medical School (1938). From 1942-45 and 1955-63 he served as the Franklin County Health Commissioner. While Coroner, he maintained a private practice in Columbus, Ohio. In addition to this he was a past President of the National and Ohio Coroners Association.
In the research I have done on Dr. Evans, it seems like he was a man who "did it all". As a kid he was a newspaper carrier. As an undergraduate at Ohio University he drove an interstate bus and stoked the hospital furnace. In Medical school he served as a US Capitol policeman and in a small capacity as a Congressional bureaucrat. During WWII he served as a First Lieutenant in the Army Medical Corps.
Hearing stories on "Doc Evans" from past Columbus Police Detectives it is clear that he had the respect of those who worked with him, always striving to have the fullest and best explanations on murders, homicides and deaths, demanding the highest level of investigation and reporting from the Detectives and giving them the support they needed in court to put away those who committed crimes.
Information comes from his Obituary in the Columbus Citizen Journal, 10/8/74 and the book "The Coppers: Personal Chronicles of the Columbus, Ohio Police Department, 1935-1960".
