Sonny was the elder son of Sarah Ellis "Sally" Floyd and Floyd William Herring, Sr. Mr Herring succumbed after a long valiant fight against throat cancer one month before his 64th birthday. He was predeceased by his mother, his only sibling Michael Paul Herring, and his father. Sonny was with his best friend, Thomas Samuel "Tommy" Tilotta, when Tommy was killed while racing midget cars in Oklahoma. Sonny was a good friend of the Tilotta family who lived across from Sonny's boyhood home. He married Mary Craighead (Tommy's step-sister) Although the union did not last, a son, Robert Darrick Herring. was born and survives his father. Sonny had 2 daughters from another marriage who survives him; Sharon Rae Herring and Tracy Lee Herring.
