Hazel D. Calkins, 88, of Hillman formerly of Gladwin, passed away Thursday, Oct. 25, 2007 at her home. She was born Nov. 3, 1918 in Mill Creek, Pennsylvania to Glenn and Pearl (Morey) Thompson. Hazel married Alva Calkins on Aug. 27, 1942 in Cleveland, Ohio. Alva passed away May 25, 1997.

Hazel was a minister's wife at 11 churches in Michigan covering a span of 38 years. She served in various capacities in those churches as a partner in ministry with her husband, Alva. She was a member of the Hillman Free Methodist Church. The couple retired to Gladwin in 1980 and she moved to Hillman in 1999.

Surviving are two sons, Lyle (Lenora) Calkins of Flushing and Wayne (Susan) Calkins of Ossineke, Michigan; two daughters, Evadeen (Leroy) Powell of Gaines and Karen (Roger) Funk of Hillman; nine grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Hazel is predeceased by two half sisters, Dorothy and Arline, and one brother, Howard.

Services were held Monday, Oct. 29, 2007 at the Hillman Free Methodist Church. Rev. Douglas McGeorge and Rev. Burton Kincaid officiated and burial was in the Butman Township Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Hillman Free Methodist Church and Hospice of Michigan. Sisson Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements. Gladwin County Record dated 10-31/2007 A-2.
