His election changed the course of the papacy, he was a modern man of his time. Leo XIII is most remembered for his 1891 encyclical Rerum Novarum, On the Condition of Labor. This encyclical has become universally recognized as the inaugural document of the tradition of Catholic social teaching and the benchmark against which all subsequent documents have been evaluated.
