Richard "Rich" William Hafer age 64 of Greensburg, Salem Township lost his long battle with cancer in the comfort of his home surrounded by his family on March 25, 2012. He was born June 1, 1947 in Latrobe, PA. He was the first of seven children born to the late Richard and Connie DeLuca Hafer.
He was employed by Texas Eastern, Spectra Energy at the Delmont Station after 43 years of service. Rich was very proud to have served his country in the Marine Corps during the Vietnam War, enlisting in July 1966 and was honorably discharged in July 1968. He received a purple heart for wounds he received there. He loved to hunt and fish and his Palomino Trout was the first to be recognized in the state of Pennsylvania in 1988.
He will always be remembered for his vegetable garden and planting his green onions and lettuce before anyone else. Rich spent many hours working on and attending car shows with his red 1970 Chevy Chevelle SS396 travelling all over America and winning many shows with it.
He belonged to the Amvets Post 85 in Export for 22 years, Manor American Legion Post 427 for 27 years, and was a life member of the Vietnam Veterans of Westmoreland County, The D. A. V. Disabled American Veterans of PA and the Antique Automobile Club of America, A.A.C.A..
He was preceded in death by his loving parents, a brother Mark Hafer, a niece Rose Marie Hafer and his beloved cocker spaniel, Sugar.
He is survived by his loving wife of 31 years, Cindy Stoltz Hafer who was the love of his life and without her wouldn't have made it through the last hard years of his life. May God bless her. Together they created three beautiful daughters, who also survive, Roxanne of Homestead, FL, Eva of Verona and Meghan of Greensburg.
Also surviving are two brothers; Ed and wife Bonnie of Delmont and Larry of Salem Twp. and three lovely sisters; Connie and husband Harry Detar of Harrison City, Carol and husband Chris Cafiero of Gulph Mills, PA and Janet Hafer of Tarentum.
He also leaves his Father-in-law and Mother-in-law, Tom and Jean Stoltz of Jeannette who loved Rich like a son, sister-in-law Debbie Ford of Daytona Beach, sister-in-law Carol Hafer of Greeensburg. Nieces and nephews Eddie, Steven, Gail, Mark, Sharon Rose, Anthony and Josh. His best buddy, Carmen Mazzoni. Semper Fidelis; Always Faithful.
Friends will be received on Friday March 30 from 2:00PM until 7:00PM in the P. David Newhouse Funeral Home, 215 Church St., New Alexandria.
Services will be held in the funeral home on Saturday at 11:00AM with Pastor Rhea Summit of the New Alexandria United Methodist Church. Interment will follow in Twin Valley Memorial Park, Inc. Full Military Honors will be accorded by VFW Post 33 of Greensburg.
