John Garety (1st class fireman) ~ b. c. born 1837, Ireland; 5'7", hazel eyes, dark hair, light complexion; enlisted in New York 1/20/1862; transferred from the North Carolina to the Monitor 2/26/1862, ship's no. 36; survived the sinking of the ironclad on 12/31/1862 and was one of those who signed a petition, dated aboard the USS Rhode Island, at sea, January 3, 1863, requesting that "we may be discharged from further service in the Navy of the United States, and be privileged to serve our country in whatever capacity may seem best."; d. of phthisis (consumption) pulmonalis 6/2/1882 in NYC.

Approved pension applications of widows and other dependents of U.S. Navy veterans who served between 1861 and 1910.
