Mr. Robert Earl Best - SAVANNAH - Captain (Retired) Robert Earl Best, of Savannah, Georgia, husband of Dr. Sandra McCord Best, entered into eternal rest on Monday, April 2, 2012, at Memorial Health University Medical Center after a brief illness. Captain Best was born July 5, 193 8, in Newington, GA to the late James and Rosalie Young Best. A son, Ramon Best, granddaughter, Phyllis Best, and his brother Rodell Best, preceded him in death. Robert received his early education in the public schools of Screven County, GA. He served his country in the United States Army with several tours of duty in Vietnam and the Republic of Korea, earning the Air Medal-11th Award, 4 overseas bars, Good Conduct Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Marksman, and Republic of Vietnam Campaign Ribbon w/60 Device before honorably retiring at the rank of Staff Sergeant with 20 years of service. Upon graduation from Savannah State College, where he earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Robert worked briefly for Grumman Aerospace, before joining the Chatham County Sheriff s Department where he served with distinction retiring on July 31, 1998 with the rank of Captain. He, was called back into service with the Sheriff's Department as a Blue Coat at the County Courthouse until his passing. Robert was affiliated with Prince Hall Masonic family were he served as Worshipful Master of Pythagoras Lodge 411; Sublime Prince of Ezra Consistory #27, Past Potentate of Omar Temple #21, Member of Imperial Council and Imperial Deputy of Internal Security. Surviving is his loving and devoted wife, Dr. Sandra McCord Best, three sons, Robert Darrell Best and his wife, Reatte; Ronald Craig Best and his wife Anna; Derrick J. Young; two daughters, Rhonda Best Orr, Regina Best Tukes and her husband, Darrell Tukes; fourteen grandchildren; six great grandchildren; four godchildren. He is also survived by one brother, three sisters, five brothers in law, four sisters in law, and numerous nieces and nephews. Please join the family at Robert's Masonic Rites at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, April 6, 2012 in the chapel of Adams Funeral Services, 510 Stephenson Avenue, Savannah, GA. Funeral Service will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday, April 7, 2012 at Second Arnold Baptist Church, 1427 East 37' Street with the Rev. James Sheppard, Jr. officiating. Captain Best will lie in state at the church beginning at 9:00 a.m until the hour of service. Burial: Hillcrest Abbey East. Remembrances: In lieu of flowers, remembrances maybe made to Omar Temple #21, Diabetes Fund, Post Office Box 5455, Savannah, GA 31402-1091.
