He married Frances Ann Poindexter in 1821 in Charlottesville. She and their two children died young.
In 1847, he sold his Albemarle property with its mills, and settled in New Braunfels, Texas, where he built more mills. He later moved to Memphis, Tennessee where he died at his home on the Louisville railroad, fifteen miles from Memphis, Shelby County, Tennessee.
His second wife, Catharine Whiting Meriwether, who was also his cousin, brought his body back to Lynchburg to be buried in her family lot. She died near Memphis but is buried in this lot also.
