ELDORADO Allie Halbert Askew was born on March 31, 1914, in Eldorado, Texas. Her parents, Robert and Battie Halbert, were pioneer ranchers. She went to be with her Lord on Saturday, Dec. 4, 2004. Service will be at 3 p.m. Monday, Dec. 6, at First United Methodist Church of Sonora with burial to follow in Sonora Cemetery. Allie was raised on ranches, following her daddy around from the time she was a little girl. She grew to love the land and her polled Hereford cattle. She remained active in ranching interests until the time of her death. In 1999, she was recognized as one of the pioneer ranching women of Sutton County. After attending public school in Sonora, she graduated from Southern Methodist University, where she met and married Clifford McBride, who preceded her in death. As a widow, she returned to the ranch to make a living for herself and her three children. She married Vestel Askew on Jan. 19, 1959. Vestel and Allie celebrated their 45th anniversary this past January. Allie was a longtime member of the First United Methodist Church of Sonora. She was also a proud member of the Texas Sheep and Goat Raisers Association, the American and Texas Polled Hereford Associations and the American Cancer Society. One of her great joys was playing bridge with her dear friends. Allie paraphrased Romans 12:9-16 in this way, "Count the day lost in which you have not done something for others." All who knew and loved her know that she lived every day by that motto. She was always one of the first to help a friend in need, and, in turn, appreciated help she received from her many friends. Whether you knew her as My Best Girl, Mama, Granny, Aunt Snooks, Allie, friend or neighbor, you knew that you had found a special person in Allie. She was preceded in death by her parents; her beloved sister, Bobbie Fawcett; as well as other family members and dear friends who were waiting to reunite with her. She leaves behind her husband, Vestel Askew of Sonora; son and daughter-in-law, Robert Michael and Frances McBride of Stephenville; son, Joel Patrick McBride of Guadalajara, Mexico; daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Glen Fisher of Sonora; step-son, Guy Askew of Von Ormy, Texas; grandson, Clifford McBride of Waco; granddaughter, Tammy Fisher of Washington, D.C.; grandson, David Fisher and his wife, Stacy, of Spring Branch; granddaughter, Melissa Hennesey and her husband, David; and niece, Randee Fawcett and her husband, Bobby Doran, of Sonora. The pride and joy of her last two years of life was her great-granddaughter, Madalyn Ann Fisher. Pallbearers will be Buck Bloodworth, Bert Bloodworth, Lee Bloodworth, Dick Byrd, Bob Byrd Jr., Mike Byrd, Jimmy Condra, Dan E. Reinhart, J.T. Hill, Eddie Sawyer, Doyle Morgan, Dick McMillan and Billy Martin. The family requests any memorials to be made to The American Cancer Society or the First United Methodist Church of Sonora.
