FREEPORT -- Elsie Mabel Hill, 88, of rural Freeport died Friday, Dec. 3, 2004, at FHN Memorial Hospital after an illness of four months.
She was born Aug. 13, 1916, in Monroe, Wis., the daughter of Alvin and Grace (Chesebro) Schmid. She was married to Elmer J. Hill on July 6, 1937, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa.
Mrs. Hill was a graduate of Wisconsin Rural Normal School in Monroe and Brown's Business College in Freeport. She was employed as a bookkeeper at the Union Dairy in Freeport, where she met her husband, and at Garrity Drugs, Emmert Drugs, and O'Mara Transfer.
She and her husband owned and operated the Arrow Foundry Company in Freeport. Mrs. Hill enjoyed spending time with her large family and was an accomplished and enthusiastic cook and gardener. She taught Sunday school for more than 20 years. She and her husband were members of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Freeport.
Survivors include her husband; a brother, Ken (Helen) Schmid of Monroe; four children, Joanne (Larry) Kerchner of Freeport, Marilyn (Ed) Holtum of Iowa City, Iowa, John (Glenna) Hill of Freeport, and Diane (Steve) Wheelock of Freeport; nine grandchildren, Beth (Dan) Fox of Shawnee, Kan., Rachel (James) Gruenwald of Colorado Springs, Kevin Wheelock of Milwaukee, Brian Wheelock of DeKalb, Bradley Wheelock of Freeport, Jennifer (Alex) Carter of West Des Moines, Iowa, Sarah, Douglas, and Lucas Hill all of Freeport. Also surviving are seven great-grandchildren, Ryan and Brandon Welty, Laura and Anna Fox, Adin and Arwyn Gruenwald, and Sophie Carter.
Mrs. Hill was preceded in death by three sisters, Lola Schmid, Dorothy Keichler and Phyllis Broussard; a son-in-law, Lynn LaMont; and three grandchildren, Kathy (Jeff) Welty, Rebecca LaMont and Cindy LaMont.
The funeral will be held at
11 a.m. Wednesday at Immanuel Lutheran Church. Burial will be at the Oakland Cemetery and Mausoleum. A visitation will be held from 4 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Walker Mortuary.
A memorial fund has been established in her name.
