---- William Matthew "Sonny" Whenry of 374 N. Perry Highway, Coolspring Township, passed away at 3:30 p.m. Sunday, April 1, 2012, in UPMC Passavant, Pittsburgh, with his family by his side after battling an extended illness. He was 77.

Mr. Whenry was born Aug. 28, 1934, in New Castle to George and Arnetta Jenkins Whenry.

He received his general equivalency diploma (GED) in 1995.

Sonny enlisted in the Army at 18 and served for 10 years.

After his tour of duty, he began work at the former Johnstown Foundry, Grove City, before working at Shenango Inc., Sharpsville, retiring at age 54.

Sonny was a Little League umpire for Mercer Area Little League for many years. He was a dedicated Mercer Mustangs sports fan and a fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers and Pirates.

He was a member of American Legion Post 584, Number 5 Mine (Springfield Township), for 58 years, serving as an adjutant for many years.

He loved hunting and fishing.

Sonny and his wife, the former Georgia E. Turner, whom he married June 2, 1961, shared more than 50 years together, dedicating their time to family. She survives at home.

Also surviving are: a son, Rickey L. Whenry and his wife Mary, Mercer; two daughters, Crystal Y. Angermeier and her husband Jake, Sharpsville; and Shelly A. Redmond and her husband Charles, Mercer; 11 grandchildren, Amber Whenry, Autumn Mudrak and her husband Bill, Ashley Malone and her husband Anthony, William "Kyle" Whenry, Justin Angermeier, Nicholas Redmond, Alisha Redmond, Tyler Angermeier, Analise Whenry, Aubrie Angermeier and Abigail Redmond; three great-grandchildren, and one expected in July; a brother, Harold "Dick" R. Whenry and his wife Marion, Mercer; and three sisters, Betty E. Bell, Grove City; Jane Ruth Frankenburg and her husband Raymond, Grove City; and Norma June Priester, Mercer.

He also leaves several nieces and nephews and his dog, Charlie.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, David Whenry; and a sister, Helen Vonnie Urey.

Calling hours: 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday (4-5-12) in SMITH FUNERAL HOME OF LEESBURG, 1778 Perry Highway, Springfield Township.

Service: Funeral service at 11 a.m. Friday (4-6-12) in the funeral home with Rod Burke, family friend, officiating.

Interment: Crestview Memorial Park, Pine Township.
