Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. In October 1861 he was commissioned a 1st Lieutenant in the 2nd Indiana Volunteer Cavalry, the first full cavalry regiment organized in Indiana. In the winter of 1861 to 1862, the 2nd Indiana Cavalry served in Kentucky. He was promoted to Captain in April 1862 as the 2nd moved with Major General Don Carlos Buell's Army of the Ohio to Pittsburgh Landing, Tennessee. He then served on the staff of Brigadier General James S. Negley as an Assistant Inspector General. In March 1864, he was commissioned Lieutenant Colonel of the 11th Indiana Volunteer Cavalry and one month later, he was given command of the 13th Indiana Volunteer Cavalry with the rank of Colonel. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on March 13, 1865 for “gallant and meritorious services during the war”, and mustered out with his regiment on September 25, 1865. He served as Postmaster of Huntsville, Alabama from 1869 to 1871, where he died from old war wounds. (bio by: Graveaddiction)
