John Edward Claflin Jr.
JACKSONVILLE, Ala. John Edward Claflin Jr., 76, died Feb. 17, 2009, at Gadsden Regional Medical Center.
Mr. Claflin was a U.S. Army veteran having served in the Korean War.
He was a lifelong member of the Springfield, Vt., Elks Club and a Mason of the St. Johns Lodge 41, also of Springfield. Mr. Claflin was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Springfield and a member of Mount Zion Baptist Church in Alabama.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping, traveling in his RV, dancing, bluegrass and country music, local stock car racing, making home videos and decorating for Christmas.
He is survived by two daughters, Laurie Scott of Chester, and Brenda Smolnik of Springfield; one son, John R. Claflin of Springfield; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his wife of 37 years, Joyce Bolster Claflin; his parents, John Edward Claflin Sr. and Agatha Claflin; his sister, Zelda Claflin; and a second wife.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Myrick Manor Senior Center, 806 Washington St., NE, Apt. 49, Jacksonville, AL 36265, or to Mount Zion Baptist Church of Alexandria, Attn: Adult Sunday School Class, 101 Zion Road, Alexandria, AL 36250.
