Retired Cresson Business Man Dies Following Illness
Cresson- James B. Gauntner, 84, of 426 Ashcroft avenue, retired Cresson business man and borough assessor for the past 11 years, died at 5 o'clock this morning at his home. He had been ill since May 27.
Mr. Gauntner was born March 21, 1871, at Carrolltown, a son of Charles and Susanna (Helsel) Gauntner. He was married to the former Rosalie McGuire.
During his career, Mr. Gauntner worked in the Altoona railroad shops as a car repairman, operated a retail meat business in Blair and Bedford counties, was proprietor of a billiard parlor and a wholesale candy distributing firm in Cresson and was employed at the Cresson sanatorium before retiring five years ago.
Mr. Gauntner was a member of St. Francis Xavier's Catholic church, Holy name society, Cresson Moose lodge 188, Knights of St. George branch 127 and the Cresson American Legion Home association.
He was a charter member and first president of the Cresson Volunteer Fire company and served for six years on the borough school board and four years on council.
Surviving are his wife, two daughters, Mrs. Catherine Lewis [foster daughter] of Johnstown and Miss Louise, at home, and three brothers, Harry of Avalon road, Juniata gap, and Charles of Cleveland, O.
Friends will be received at the Casher funeral home, Cresson.
