Fred G. Holthaus, 81, Centralia, died Thursday, October 22, 1998, as a result of injuries suffered in a one vehicle accident 5 miles south of Seneca on K-63.

He was born March 29, 1917, on a farm northwest of Kelly, the son of Frederick and Johanna Sudbeck Holthaus. He attended Blue Star School and St. Bede's School in Kelly. In 1928, the family moved to a farm northwest of St. Benedict where he attended St. Mary's school. He worked on the family farm and for farmers in the area. He attended an aviation school in Kansas City before World War II.

In February 1942, he was inducted into the U.S. Army and served in Guadalcanal and the Northern Solomon Islands. He received two bronze stars for his service. He contracted malaria twice while overseas. He was discharged in October 1945 and returned home to farm at Kelly. He was a farmer and stockman for many years and was still active in farming with his sons. He was an ambitious farmer.

On April 15, 1947, he married Alma Haverkamp at St. Bede's Church in Kelly. They celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in April 1997. She survives.

He was a member of St. Bede's Church in Kelly where he served as an usher for many years. He was a member of the Earle W. Taylor Post #21 fo the American Legion in Seneca. Fred was a quiet man, who took a lot of interest in what his children and grandchildren were doing.

Survivors besides his wife, Alma, are; sons, Leonard Holthaus, Lee's Summit, MO; Steven Holthaus, Seneca; Clarence Holthaus, Centralia; daughters, Marlene Handke, Topeka; Alda LaCrone, Topeka; brother, Aloy Holthaus, Seneca; sisters, Ida Olberding, Seneca; Henrietta Koch, Axtell; Frances Broxterman, Chicago Heights, IL; and five grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers, Alphonse Holthaus; Edwin Holthaus; Carl Holthaus; Raymond Holthaus; Lawrence Holthaus; sisters, Mary Holthaus and Bertha Weber.

Mass of Christian Burial was held at St. Bede's Catholic Church, Kelly. Burial was in the church cemetery with military honors provided by Post #21 of the American Legion.
