Carlton Earle Miller was born in October 1891 on Haight Street in San Francisco, CA, the only child of Charles Edward Miller and Harriet Peterson. Earle lived a fast and furious young life, racing powerboats and sailboats in San Francisco and Santa Barbara, and attending college at Yale in New Haven. In 1914 he married Delphina Hammer in Branford, CT and their well-documented honeymoon voyage was aboard Earle's 106' Herreshoff designed yacht ATHENE: they went from New London, CT to San Diego CA, transiting the Panama Canal in 1915 as the new canal's first private yacht. In 1917, Delphina and Earle had one child, Carlton Emil Miller, and in 1922 Earle went on in a second marriage to Mary Catherine Herlihy to have four more children, all born and raised in Palo Alto, CA. For some time in the 20's and 30's, he owned the National Magnesia Manufacturing Company in Redwood City, CA. He owned a large ranch called the "Circle Anchor" in Hornbrook, CA, where the family enjoyed hunting and country summer living. Throughout his later life Earle suffered depression and instability that led to periodic institutionalization; ultimately he died of heart attack in Carmel, CA in 1960 while under personal care.
