William Henry Meriner, son of Dr. Henry Meriner and the former Mrs. Jane [Montgomery] Bell, widow of James Bell, was born on the 21st of August 1821 in the Fairfield District of South Carolina. In 1831, his father died and his mother remarried James Kincaid. Around 1835, William, his older brother Benjamin and extended family of Montgomery's, Kincaid's and Bell's emigrated to Oktibbeha County Mississippi.
Dr. William H. Meriner was a Representative in the State Legislature for the area around Oktibbeha County for several terms in the late 1850's.
Departed this life at the residence of Dr. C. P. Montgomery, Starkville, Miss. on the 9th of August 1861, Dr. William H. Meriner, aged 39 years and 10 months. He was a member of the Baptist church. Although having no fondness for the changing scenes of political life, yet a few years ago he had been chosen the representative of this county in the State Legislature. This relation he sustained at the time of his death. He was among the first who volunteered their services in defense of the South. He was a member of that noble company, the "Oktibbeha Rescue" –who went forth to repel an invading foe. When the company arrived at Corinth, he was constituted Surgeon General of the State of Mississippi. While engaged in attending to the sick and dying he was attacked with dysentery and conveyed back to Starkville where he died in the house of a relative.
