LaVerne Gerdes Carpenter, former longtime resident of Alice, Texas, passed away Thursday, March 28, 2012, in Fort Worth, Texas.
Born February 26, 1922, in Shiner, Texas, to Fred and Pauline Gerdes, LaVerne was the youngest of five children. She loved to talk about happy days growing up on the farm and playing with her 42 cats in Alfred, Texas. The family later moved to Alice where she attended Alice High School and was a proud member of the Drum and Bugle Corp, graduating in 1940.
In 1946 she married Solon Carpenter. They lived in Houston for 12 years before moving back to Alice in the early 1970's. Solon and LaVerne shared a love for the game of golf and played in many tournaments around the state. LaVerne hit her first "Hole in One" while playing in a tournament at Alice Country Club. She was past President of the Alice Country Club Ladies Golf Association, past President of the Alice Ex Students Association, a member of the Gulf Coast Genealogy Association of Corpus Christi, and the San Antonio and Austin Genealogy Associations. She was a member of First United Methodist Church of Alice. She loved Alice with all her heart and missed it dearly. Now she is home.
She was predeceased by her parents, her brothers Fred Rendor Gerdes and Bruno George Gerdes; sister Nadine Pauline Gerdes; brother-in-law Jack Fisher, infant son David Wayne Carpenter, and husband of 54 years, Solon Carpenter.
She is survived by her two sons and their families: Jim Carpenter and his wife Molly, of Fort Worth, and Steve Carpenter and his wife Natasha, of Houston. LaVerne leaves behind her grandchildren: Allison Ann and her husband Pete Yoder, Mary Katherine and her husband Jeff Wilson, and Alex Carpenter; and her great grandchildren Will and Andy Yoder and Carsey Wilson. She is also survived by a sister, Alyne Gerdes Fisher of San Antonio and beloved nieces Sue Sarran and Nancy Fisher.
Graveside services will be conducted 2:00 p.m., Monday, April 2, 2012 at the Alice Cemetery.
If so desired, the family kindly requests remembrances be made in LaVerne's name to First United Methodist Church, 111 N Adams, Alice, Texas 78332; the South Texas Museum, P.O. Box 3232, Alice, Texas 78333; or a charity of your choice.
