MORTON - John W. Schmitt, 73, of Morton died at 2:54 a.m. Wednesday, March 28, 2012, at OSF Saint Francis Medical Center in Peoria.
He was born April 15, 1938, in Peoria to Ulrich and Doris (Schmidt) Schmitt. He married Patricia Reed on June 12, 1965, in East Peoria.
Surviving are his wife, Patricia Schmitt of Morton; two daughters, Christine (Doug) Brooks of East Peoria and Lisa (Tyler) Salisbury of Normal; three grandchildren, Jessica Brooks and Ashley Brooks, both of East Peoria, and Michael Scheffert of Normal; one great-granddaughter, Lilly Marie Scheffert of Normal; his mother, Doris Schmitt of East Peoria; his sister-in-law, Nancy Schmitt of Robein, Ill.; one brother; and two sisters.
He was preceded in death by his father; his twin brother, James Schmitt, in 1993; and one sister, JoAnne Schmitt, in 1976.
He was a Vietnam War Army veteran.
John was employed at Caterpillar Inc. in East Peoria, retiring in 2002 as a heat treat furnace operator. He also owned and operated John's Barbershop at Lake of the Woods in Dunlap.
He was a member of United Auto Workers Local 974 in East Peoria and the Izaak Walton League in Spring Bay.
He served as an election judge in Morton.
He was a past member of the Optimist Club in North Peoria.
John was very active and supportive in his children's and grandchildren's lives.
Visitation will be from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday, March 31, 2012, at Knapp-Johnson Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Morton. Cremation will be accorded following visitation. Burial of the cremated remains will be in Mount Zion Cemetery in Deer Creek at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Central Illinois Riding Therapy, 305 Neumann Drive, East Peoria, IL 61611.
