Born Lena Copeland Baskette, she made her film debut at the age of 9 with the movies "Shoes." Basquette is remembered for playing the lead in Cecil B. De Mille's "The Godless Girl." She became a favorite actress of German dictator Adolph Hitler, she was also invited over to Germany to meet him. Basquette retired in the early 1940s, but again made headlines in 1943 after she was raped by a GI. The soldier was sentenced to 20 years in prison for his crime. Basquette's life was tragic. After her last divorce, (she was married nine times altogether, among others with producer Sam Warner) Basquette retired to a remote farm in Pennsylvania where she bred Great Danes, also working as an unpaid judge at dog shows.
