Information from Lewie Dunn ancestor of Robert Haynes.

Robert Henry Haynes died in the Civil War. He was attached to Co. G 23rd Alabama Battalion Sharpshooters. He was born in Morgan County, GA and died in the trenches in Petersburg, VA. His parents were William Haynes and Temperance Bellah Haynes.

His wife was Eveline O'Neal Haynes. She is buried at Gilliam Springs, Edy now Arab, Alabama in a marked grave.

It was reported that Robert Henry was killed in the Trenches of Petersburg, VA while standing up to slap his son James Knox Haynes, (Lewie Dunn's grandfather's grandfather) down for showing himself to the Union Army Snipers. Co. G 23rd Alabama Battalion Sharpshooters were near the famed crater area along the Confederate lines. He was shot by a minie ball in the temple acording to what my grandfather told him when he was a teenager.

James Knox Haynes said his father was buried in a trench near the lines. Lewie Dunn has not been able to locate the exact spot or a cemetery.

Until his death in 1915 James Knox Haynes aka J.K. would travel up to VA and visit his father's grave. J.K.'s Find a Grave # is 31852383. He is buried at New Hope United Methodist Church Cemetery, Locust Grove, Henry County Georgia. His wife was Nancy Caroline Gray Haynes, Find a Grave #70278035.

One person suggested a possible burial site could be Blandford Cemetery, Petersburg, VA Plot Unknown. However, he is not listed in the cemetery record. Confederates killed at Petersburg Sieige were buried here.
