Born in New York City, he started his motion picture career in 1911, receiving a break into the business when he was introduced to film director D.W. Griffith. About 1921 his grew into one of the most popular Western stars of the early motion pictures, occasionally writing and directing films as well. In the early 1930s he moved slowly into character roles and was nominated for an Oscar for one of them. He was in 260 films from 1911 to 1947.
