Son of Major John Finley and Ellen Tate. Trustee Wilkesboro HS. Married Sarah Ann Gordon 22 Jul 1846 (date per letter from John's brother A W Finley) and lived at the former Gordon Oakland estate house. Left for Alabama after 1850 census but returned to the Wilkesboro, NC area during the civil war (1863) by going through Union lines.

Farmed the land north of the Yadkin and west of the Reddies rivers.
