Born William John Hughes in Llanelli, Wales, he got his start performing on stage as a child and went on to perform in leading roles on Broadway. Usually cast as a sensitive hero, he made his big screen debut in the silent film era appearing in "And the Children Pay" (1918). As a regular for Fox and MGM Studios, he appeared in over 40 films such as "Every Mother's Son" (1918), "Sentimental Tommy" (1921), "Forget Me Not" (1922), "The Sky Writer" (1928) and "Scareheads" (1931).
