Co C 139th Reg P V, Enlisted 9-1-1862 Trans 1864
Valentine as a young man ran off and joined the Union Army. He was a drummer boy at first. He was wounded in the right arm or shoulder at Little Round Top in the Battle of Gettysburg on July 2, 1863. He was hospitalized until his discharge on July 13, 1865.The family story goes that Valentine was shot in the shoulder and stuffed a silk handkerchief (a gift from his sweetheart) into the bullet hole. Silk is sterile and probably saved him from sepsis and blood loss. Some members of the family think that Valentine may of studied to be a minister. (Find A Grave contributor Myra Nease Camp. Source:
