John Wesley, son of Peter and Sophia (Wood) Stearns, was born in Westford, VT, 24 Aug 1835, and died in Rutland, 22 Nov 1909. He attended the public schools of his native town and the Hampton Seminary, Fairfax, VT. About 1859 he removed to Boston, MA, and learned the carpenter's trade. In 1864 he came to Rutland, where he resided the remainder of his days. For a number of years he worked at his trade in Rutland. In 1869 he engaged in business as a dealer in furniture and undertaker and built up a large and successful business. He was active in municipal affairs and held various offices of trust and responsibility. Under the town government he served on the board of selectmen. In politics he was a Republican. In religion a Congregationalist. He married in St. Albans, VT, 12 Jan 1864, Isabelle, born in Canada, 20 Dec 1845, daughter of John and Jane (Dunwoodie) Hammond. She died at Rutland, 23 Dec 1910. They had but one child, John Burnham, born September 14, 1875.
