Margaret Wallace Daly, 91, died at her home in Fairfield surrounded by family March 20, 2012.
Born April 18, 1920, in New York City, she was the daughter of Lew and Josephine Parrot Wallace. Her great-grandfather Gen. Lew Wallace was the author of Ben-Hur and served as a major general in the Civil War.
Daly attended Bennington College and made her Broadway debut in the musical "Janie" in 1942. She was married for 49 years to Michael J. Daly, a World War II hero who was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor.
A tireless advocate for the mentally handicapped, Daly served on the Board of Trustees at the Kennedy Center in Bridgeport and was awarded the Evelyn Kennedy Bowl for her service.
In her later life, Daly earned a degree in landscape design from the New York Botanical Garden and ran a successful landscape business for more than 20 years. A passionate and accomplished gardener, she was honored by the Garden Club of America.
She is survived by her sister Susan W. Drake of Greenwich; her brother William N. Wallace of Westport; and her children W. Sanford (Melanie) Miller Jr. of Chadds Ford, Pa., Blair Miller and her husband Gregory Leddy of Ashville, N.C., Deirdre M. Daly and her husband Alfred U. Pavlis, and Michael W. Daly, all of Fairfield. She is also survived by eight grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband.
Friends may call at 155 Redding Road in Fairfield from 3 to 7 p.m. Friday. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Cathedral of St. Augustine in Bridgeport with burial to follow in Oak Lawn Cemetery in Fairfield.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Kennedy Center, 2440 Reservoir Ave., Trumbull, CT 06611. The Spear-Miller Funeral Home in Fairfield is assisting the family with arrangements.
