Marinus Van Essen
Birth: Jan. 25, 1877, Netherlands
Death: Apr. 7, 1958
San Diego
San Diego County
California, USA

Born in Brandwijk, Zuid Holland, Holland. Son of Kommer (Commer) van Essen & Christina Jacoba Tas. Husband of Cornelia Rekoert, and father of Kommer (Commer), Marie (Maria), Jan (John), & Christian James. Marinus, Cornelia & the children immigrated to the US in 1910, leaving Rotterdam on March 26 aboard the S.S. Noordam, and arriving April 4 at the Port of New York. The ship's manifest lists Marinus' occupation as "baker". Passing through Ellis Island, the family headed to Grand Rapids, MI where Commer van Essen (Marinus' father) was already living. Sometime after the birth of their youngest son, Christian James in 1914, the family moved on to Denver, Colorado. According to his WWI Draft Registration Card dated Sept. 12, 1918 he was employed as a baker at the Merchants Biscuit Company in Denver. In 1940 Marinus & Cornelia moved to California, settling in San Diego County with son John & his wife Emma, and son Christian. Preceded in death by Cornelia, Marinus died in 1958 at San Diego County General Hospital (then located in San Diego at the end of Front St. on "Pill Hill"). With arrangements made through Sherrill Mortuary, his body was cremated at Cypress View Crematory in San Diego. Disposition of ashes is unknown by the family at this time.
(On his death certificate Marinus is listed as Martin Van Essen.)
