Hall of Fame Boxing Figure, Author. His extensive knowledge of the sport earned him the nickname "The Guru of Boxing". Born Bert Randolph Sugar, he attended the University of Maryland and attained his law degree from the University of Michigan, being admitted to the bar in Washington, D.C. Sugar had moved to New York, where he made a name for himself in the advertising industry and became noted for creating the N-E-S-T-L-E-S jingle ad campaign. His passion for boxing led the the purchasing of the publication Boxing Illustrated serving as editor from 1969 to 1973. During the course of his career, Sugar contributed hundreds of articles to such prominent publications as Sports Illustrated, Sports Business Journal and The New Yorker. In addition, he penned roughly 80 books on boxing history and appeared in numerous documentaries. For his body of work in the sport, he was enshrined into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2005. He died from cancer. (bio by: C.S.)
