Xum H. Speegle, an insurance broker and executive in Salinas for more than 50 years, died Saturday in a Salinas hospital after a long illness. He was 77.
The Comanche, Tex., native came to Salinas and entered the insurance business in 1923. He had served with the army in France during World War I and was awarded the Silver Star for gallantry.
Speegle was a member of American Legion Post 33 and Alisal Lodge 163 of the International Order of Odd Fellows. He was an avid sportsman all his life.
Speegle served as the chairman of the Monterey County March of Dimes.
A founder of the Argonaut Insurance Co. Speegle remained active in the business until his final illness. He was most recently associated with Speegle-Temple Insurance.
Speegle is survived by his widow, Velma Speegle of the family home at 80 San Miguel Ave.; a daughter, Mrs. Carol McLeod of Orinda; two sisters, Mrs. Margaret Branch of Fresno and Mrs. Tennie Worthington of Clovis; and a brother, Fred Godwin of Redding.
Funeral services will be held tomorrow at 10:30 a.m. at the Struve and Laporte Funeral Chapel. The Rev. T. Duane Jensen will officiate. Entombment will be in the Garden of Memories.
