Col. Fred I. Chanatry, USAF (RET), passed away suddenly on March 22, 2012, at his home in Albuquerque, NM. Fred was born in 1927, in Utica, NY, where he spent his childhood and graduated from Proctor High School. Fred attended the United States Military Academy at West Point graduating with the Class of 1948. Fred was commissioned in the United States Air Force, where he served his country for 29 years. During an early assignment to Kirtland AFB New Mexico, Fred met and fell in love with Teresa Irene Sullivan (an Albertan) with whom he spent the remainder of his life. Fred's military career included postings in England (site of his marriage); Pease AFB, NH; Offutt AFB, NE; Wiesbaden Germany; the Pentagon; Vietnam; Clark AFB, the Philippines; and the Department of Energy in Maryland. His last Air Force assignment was "home" to Kirtland AFB where he served as Director of Nuclear Surety. Fred received an MBA from Syracuse University and graduated from the Air War College in Montgomery Alabama. Fred and Teresa have resided in Albuquerque, NM since 1976, with the exception of three years in Saudi Arabia with Northrop Aircraft. Fred continued an active life as a realtor for the Merit Company from 1981 until 2007. Fred is survived by wife, Teresa; son, Michael Chanatry and his wife, Dianne of Centerville, OH; grandsons, Ryan (Singapore) and Casey (Asheville,NC) Chanatry; brothers and sisters (all of Utica, NY), Joseph and William Chanatry and his wife, Janet, Antoinette Murad and her husband, Alex and Nellie Chanatry. Rosary will be recited on Tuesday, March 27, 2012 at 7:00 p.m. at French-Lomas Chapel, with visitation 1 hour prior from 6:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, March 28, 2012 at 9:15 a.m. at Sangre De Christo Catholic Community, 8901 Candelaria Rd NE. Burial, with full military honors, will follow at 2:15 p.m. at Santa Fe National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to The West Point Society of NM, 4902 Calle Del Cielo NE, Albuquerque, NM 87111, the Sangre De Christo Catholic Community, 8901 Candelaria Rd NE Albuquerque, NM 87112 or a charity of your choice.
