[from The New York Times, March 16, 1880]

Mr. Abraham Scholle, an old merchant of this City, and the founder of the clothing house of Scholle Brothers, in Broadway with a branch house in San Francisco, died yesterday, in the sixty-fourth year of his age. He was born in Bavaria in 1817, and after attaining a good common school education he learned the trade of a weaver. He emigrated to this country in 1839, and, finding no immediate opening in his trade, invested what money he had in small wares and peddled them about the suburbs. When he had accumulated sufficient money, he opened a small dry goods store in Division-street in 1847. Shortly afterward he took his brother William* as a partner, and the firm assumed the name of Scholle Brothers. Three years later the firm removed to the Bowery, and in 1851, the sale of clothing having proved more profitable than general dry goods, the stock was sold out, and the firm entered exclusively into the clothing trade in John-street. A younger brother, Jacob, was admitted to the partnership, and a branch house was started in California in the same year. The firm prospered, and in 1868 Abraham Scholle retired from business with a fortune. He was a man of strict probity, and bore a high reputation among business men. He leaves a widow and four adult children. Mr. Scholle was a leading member of the congregation of the Temple Emanu-El, from which his funeral will take place at 9:30 o'clock to-morrow morning.
