For four seasons (1951 to 1954), he played at the tackle position in the Canadian Football League with the Edmonton Eskimos and Calgary Stampeders. Raised in Kansas where he played high school football, he attended Kansas State College and excelled in wrestling, becoming Big 7 champion. After graduation, he signed with Edmonton of the CFL and contributed to the Eskimos' squad which appeared in the Grey Cup Game in 1952. He retired from football with Calgary following the 1954 season and launched a 25-year career as a professional wrestler, later becoming a promoter. He was posthumously inducted into the WWE's Hall of Fame in 2012. He was the father of former professional wrestler Tully Blanchard, best known as a member of wrestling's "Four Horsemen".
