CLAREMONT - James Lee Brown, 76, of Rt. 1, Claremont, died Friday at 3 p.m. in an area hospital after a period of failing health. A retired farmer and carpenter, he was born July 8, 1899, in Catawba County. His parents were the late Willie Lee Brown and Polly Anna Shook Brown. Brown's wife, Minnie, died April 21.
Surviving are two sisters, Mrs. Mattie Sigmon and Mrs. Alice Abernathy, both of Catawba; a brother, Guy H. Brown of Catawba; his stepmother, Mrs. Ophia Brown of Catawba; three half-sisters, Mrs. Fannie Miller and Mrs. J. H. (Nell) McGuinn, both of Catawba, and Mrs. James Hoke (Ruth) Sigmon of Claremont; four half-brothers, Charlie Brown and Garland Brown, both of Conover, and Ross Brown of Catawba and Joe Brown of Greensboro.
Funeral services will be conducted Sunday at 3 p.m. at St. Mark's Lutheran Church by the Rev. Stanley Stiver. Burial will be in St. Mark's Cemetery in Claremont.
The body will remain at Drum Funeral Home in Conover, until taken to the church where it will lie in state 30 minutes prior to the funeral hour. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 7 until 8:30 o'clock tonight.
It has been suggested that memorials be made to St. Mark's Lutheran Church.
James was received by adult confirmation 4 March 1923 by Rev. Oscar A. Baunschweig at St. Mark's.
