From Gasconade County History Book, Volume II, published 2003: Carl retired from Missouri State Highway Department in June 1987 and went to farming full time. the farm, located at 1453 Highway Y, was a centennial farm in 1996. Carl's grandfather, Fred Sassmann, purchased the 160 acres from Gusta Bock on 8/31/1895. More land was added through the years.
Carl Eugene Sassmann, 78, of Owensville passed away Friday, March 11, 2011 at Gasconade Manor Nursing Home in Owensville.
Carl was born in Owensville, June 17, 1932, a son of the late Ella (Lehnhoff) and George Sassmann. On August 9, 1953, in the church parsonage in Bland he was united in marriage to Mildred Gerloff. He had served his country with the U. S. Army. He was a member of the Woollam Methodist Church where he had served on the Church Board.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mildred; two sons, Delmar and Dennis Sassmann; grandson Tyler Peth and great-grandson, Jacob Harness.
His survivors include his daughter, Denise Peth and husband Rick of Owensville; daughter-in-law, Cathy Sullivan and husband Jim of Owensville; three grandchildren, Cody Sassmann and wife Erin, Amber Harness and husband Justin and Scott Peth; and by three great-grandchildren, Payton Harness, Tucker Sassmann and Kinley Harness.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 19 at 10:30 a.m. at Gottenstroeter Funeral Home in Owensville with Pastor Jackie Asher officiating. Burial will be in the New Woollam Zoar Cemetery.
