Elizabeth Whiteside Ledbetter Wilmoth Jones was the fourth of ten children born to John Whiteside Jr. (1758-1835) and first wife Eleanor Kelly Whiteside (ca. 1759-1828). She married three times.
Her first husband was John W. Ledbetter (ca. 1782-1818), whom she married in Rutherford Co. on August 11, 1804. By Ledbetter she had seven children: Barzillai (b. 1805), Nancy Kelly (b. 1807), Sarah (b. 1809), Richard Overton (b. 1811), John W. Jr. (b. 1813), Mary (b. 1815), and Noah Hampton (b. 1815).
Several years after John Ledbetter's death, around 1822, Elizabeth married Gabriel Wilmoth (b. 1778) as his second wife. The couple had one child: Elizabeth Alvira (b. 1823). The marriage proved to be unhappy. Sometime before March 1828 Wilmoth abandoned his wife and family. (A legal notice, published by the Clerk of Court of Rutherford County in March 1828, states that "Gabriel Wilmoth...is not an inhabitant of this state." [Western Carolinian (Salisbury, NC), 18 March 1828]) In 1829 Elizabeth petitioned for a divorce which was granted in April 1830.
Shortly after her divorce was finalized--in early June 1830--Elizabeth married Jones O. Bradley (ca. 1785-ca. 1865) as his second wife. Bradley was a prosperous farmer and slave owner in Montford Cove, Rutherford Co. No children were born to this marriage which lasted 35 years until Bradley's death. Afterwards, the widowed and elderly Elizabeth moved into the household of her daughter Nancy Williams in Chimney Rock, not far from her birthplace.
