Bertha Rayner Ash Warren, 104, of Conway, died Friday (Sept. 14, 2001). Her husband, John Sharpe Warren, preceded her in death.
She is survived by daughter Helen Marie Warren Casteel and husband Charles Edwin Casteel, sister Doris Ash Nickel of Centerville, Miss., grandchildren Warren Thomas Casteel of Plano, Texas, Gerald Edwin Casteel of McKinney, Texas, Sue Ann Casteel of Sherwood, Laura Marie Casteel Campbell of Shreveport, La.; great-grandchildren Brittany and Bradley Casteel of McKinney, Texas, and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was born Nov. 17, 1896, in Vicksburg, Miss., to the late John Lowry Ash, Sr. and Minnie Rose Vine Ash. She grew up and attended school in Centreville, Miss., graduated from college at Mississippi State Teachers College, and received her master's degree from Emory University. She taught school for over 50 years, first in the Kentucky mountains, then in Georgia and Mississippi and for many years at Ida Burns Elementary School in Conway, finishing her career at Mayflower Elementary School. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Conway and of Delta Kappa Gamma.
She lived her life with zest and joy, always seeing the beauty in each day. She loved life and dedicated herself to helping others in her own special way. She especially loved the children she taught in school, the neighborhood children, and the friendships she shared with local college students. She attributed her long life to hard work.
Visitation will be Sunday at 6-8 p.m. at Roller-McNutt Funeral Home in Conway.
Honorary pallbearers will be Frank Freeman, Cecil McDermott, Ferris Baker, Bob Gill, Jack Bell, Bill Ledbetter, Wilburn Smith and Jim Beal.
Internment will be at 10 a.m Monday in a family service at Crestlawn Cemetery followed by a public memorial service at 11 a.m. at First United Methodist Church in Conway with Dr. Joel A. Cooper and Rev. Aubrietta Jones officiating.
Arrangements are under the direction of Roller- McNutt Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Mount Eagle Christian Center, 2801 Wills Court, Conway, AR 72032 or to the church of your choice.
